State School Teachers' Union of Western Australia
Welcome to the Official website of the State School Teachers' Union of Western Australia. The SSTUWA represents the vast majority of teachers in West Australian public pre-primary, primary and high public schools as well as TAFE colleges. Our members are dedicated to the education and well being of the youth of our state and the incredible potential they possess. Every day our teachers perform miracles with children and commit themselves to ensuring that every child has access to the best quality education possible.

In a time of unprecedented social change and economic rationalization, our teachers risk being left behind – yet are constantly called upon to guide our youth through the minefield that is modern life. The push for improved wages and conditions for teachers also results in improved conditions and more opportunity for West Australian kids. Our education professionals have a true desire to deliver the best outcomes for students - please support your teachers as they strive to provide the best education possible for our young people and our communities.

Bus diary August 11

A sunny but very cold afternoon saw a group of about 20 members from Katanning SHS, Katanning PS and Braeside PS get on the union bus.  They toured Katanning, undertaking a couple of “awareness-raising laps” of the town centre. Community members responded with obvious curiosity. Members disembarked at the library, where they gathered in the meeting room to discuss aspects and concerns of the agreement in-principle as well as the need to address the teacher shortage, housing for country teachers, behaviour management and other outstanding matters in the union’s ongoing campaign. Ian Daw and the crew at "Silver City"The union campaign bus picked up members at Cloverdale PS and Belmont City College, who were also joined by members from Bayswater PS. They travelled on to Silver City where they allocated a number of leaflets to be presented to various DET senior personnel. The group was directed to Kim Ward (Director of Staffing), who received the leaflets on behalf of his colleagues. Mr Ward was keen to know what the members thought would be the outcome of the vote on the DET agreement in-principle.  Thanks go to the small but valiant group of members who participated. Every little action builds towards making a difference.

The bus had a change from the usual routine with a visit to seven key government ministers with lavish offices tucked up in Duma House West Perth. The idea was to visit and present each minister with a leaflet outlining the key concerns of teachers. It wasn't as easy as it seemed. Getting past security proved a challenge but eventually electoral officers came down and were presented with a union pamphlet and a brief speech outlining our concerns over our pay and conditions. Well done to Churchlands Primary who represented the SSTUWA at this event.

Jacqui with the State's oldest teacher at a spritely 75!The bus made its way into the great Southern for a visit to Narrogin. Members in this town have been very active and supportive of union action and therefore it was no surprise when a good sized crowd gathered at the town hall for a meeting. Information discussed at this meeting was then passed onto the local member Tuck Waldron.

Kalamunda has been covered by the bus.On Monday the bus continued its journey in marginal seat country by visiting the Kalamunda electorate. The bus pick up was from Challis PS which then moved members to Alannah MacTiernan’s office. A brief meeting with the minister’s electorate officer relayed concerns teachers had regarding pay and conditions. Members then put in some time delivering around 900 leaflets to households in the Kalamunda electorate.

Teacher Shortage Worries

Teacher Shortages in Western Australia

Western Australia faces a teacher shortage of epic proportions. Recent reports have estimated that within a few years Western Austalia will be more than 2000 teachers short. DET already forces teachers to teach in subjects for which they have no formal training to plug the gaps! This situation MUST be addressed now! Unless the state government acts quickly and decisively to solve this situation, the future of public education is dire. Band-aid solutions will not work, the State Governmnet must listen to teachers and make teaching an attractive career choice before it is too late. They can start by releasing the TwomeyTaskforce Report and negotiating a fair and reasonable EBA with the union.

Teachers' EBA

EBA 2008 - When??

In Feb 2008 the existing EBA for teachers expired. DET presented an insulting EBA offer to teachers including a pay increase that was way under the inflation rate. Teachers overwhelmingly rejected the offer. The union has repeatedly tried to enter into serious negitiations with DET but to this point, DET has not presented a realistic nor fair EBA offer for teachers.  It is time for all teachers to receive a real pay increase and attention paid to legitimate workload issues. The cost of this not being a fair and decent EBA are just far too great for all of our children.

Flexible Delivery Survey
Public Access - News
Wednesday, 27 August 2008

The union is preparing evidence for its case in the Arbitration Commission, so we would appreciate your input on this topic. We are concerned about the impact of ‘flexible ways of working on lecturers’ workloads.  By flexible, we mean anything that is not college and classroom/workshop based with one class studying the same unit of competency at the same time.

The facts about the current dispute

SSTUWA West Australian Teachers' DisputeYou need to know what is happening in public education because the future of our children and the future of Western Australia is at stake. Something that every parent needs to know! The current dispute between State School Teachers’ Union and the State Government follows months of misleading and mischievous media comments by the Minister for Education and Training Mark McGowan.  In September 2007 the Teachers’ Union placed a log of claims to the department at the start of negotiations. It included salaryincreases, changes to class sizes, changes to DOTT time(planning and preparation time) and improvements to ruralhousing for teachers who work in country areas. The Government refused to discuss the issues seriously -in fact it misled the community on a number of occasions about what it was offering.

Is this government doing enough for your children?

Media Release: Government Submission An Insult!
Public Access - Media Releases
Thursday, 03 July 2008
“At a time of crisis in education, this Carpenter Government has missed an opportunity to step up to the plate and hit a home run on behalf of public education, students and the W.A. community and economy. Rather, it appears to want a prolonged tussle in the mud … an approach which the Union believes will be detrimental to teachers and administrators working for DET," - Anne Gisborne

Negotiations in the WA Industrial Relations Commission (WAIRC) over the wages and conditions for teachers over the next two years will be long, drawn out and bitter, according to the President of the State School Teachers’ Union of Western Australia (SSTUWA) Ms Anne Gisborne.
