white-ribbonThe White Ribbon Campaign is the first male-led campaign to end violence against women and girls in the world. We encourage men and boys to take a stand and say that violence, in any form, is never acceptable.

The White Ribbon Campaign recognises that most men do not commit acts of violence against women and girls. Yet by staying silent about this issue, we are allowing it to continue. The White Ribbon campaign asks men to speak out against violence against women and girls. Wearing a white ribbon represents men’s public pledge never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women and girls.

The White Ribbon Campaign has spread to countries on every continent, and commences each year on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women and girls.

female-worker-pcWomen workers are losing out: new global report on gender gap is a wake up call for Australian employers

Australian employers must do more to encourage women’s participation in the workforce and close the gender pay gap, following a major international report showing Australia is slipping further down world rankings on some critical indicators, say unions.

Australia lags behind developing nations such as South Africa, the Philippines, Lesotho and Sri Lanka on the overall rankings, according to the World Economic Forum’s annual Global Gender Gap Index released this week.

On the critical measure of labour force participation, Australia has fallen from 40 to 50, with the female-to-male ratio stagnating at 0.84.

And on the measure of wage equality for similar work, Australia ranks only 60th in the world.

manandwomanOn average, it takes women 14 months to earn the same amount that men earn in 12 months. Starting from the new financial year on 1st July, Equal Pay Day commemorates the day when women’s earnings "catch up" to men’s.

It’s almost 40 years since Australian women were officially granted equal pay for equal work by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.  Yet women still earn 17% less than men or one million dollars less over a lifetime.

While women are now more likely to have a tertiary qualification than men, women graduates will earn $2,000 less than male graduates and $7,400 less by the fifth year after graduation;

Fewer than 2% of ASX 200 companies have a female chief executive officer and only 1 in 12 board directors are women; and women retire with less than half the amount of savings in their superannuation accounts compared with men.

A win for indigenous women

Elizabeth-Broderick"Yesterday was an historic event for all women everywhere," was the response from Australia's Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Elizabeth Broderick, to the release of the Report (Our future in our hands) about a new National Representative Body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Report proposes that gender equality is mandated at all levels of governance for Australia's new national voice for Indigenous peoples - a national first.

Commissioner Broderick said: "The proposed National Representative Body sets a new benchmark for any public organisation in this country. With Australia's poor record on supporting women into leadership particularly in the private sector, I am delighted that our country's First Peoples are setting the pace - and challenging the rest of us."

Megan Davis, Director of the Indigenous Law Centre at the University of New South Wales and an Aboriginal woman from South East Queensland agreed. "This is a major step forward for our people in ensuring that women and men will share equally in developing our national vision for Indigenous policy in Australia. A strong national organisation is vital to tackling Indigenous disadvantage and the proposed National Representative Body will ensure that Indigenous women are at the table."

women-sustainableInvitation: As President of the Australian Federation of University Women it gives me great pleasure to invite all members and friends to attend the 34th AFUW Triennial Conference to be held at Sancta Sophia College, University of Sydney, 26 - 29 November, 2009.

Our Conference Theme, Women Building Sustainable Futures, is in part an AFUW response to the 2007 - 2010 Programme for Action of the International Federation of University Women, but it also expresses our awareness that sustainability of physical and social resources is an issue crucial to the future well - being of all Australians. The theme will be pursued by the distinguished speakers of our Public Day programme (Saturday 28 November) and in the Workshop planned for the Pacific Graduate Women’s network, which is currently chaired by AFUW and will be holding its Council meeting in conjunction with the Conference.

In addition to welcoming PGWNet members from Fiji, Samoa, the Solomons, Tonga and Vanuatu, we look forward very much to the promised presence of some members from our sister Association, the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women, and the IFUW President, Louise Croot.

Gender equity and education

conf2008-001-th.jpgOn Sunday 8th March AEU members marked International Women’s Day. In reflecting on the world today, too many women and girls are literally starving because of the food crisis, loss of jobs, lower wages and cuts in social benefits. Many are illiterate and have no access to education. Two thirds of the one billion illiterate adults who have no access to basic education are women.

The AEU is committed to fighting for pay equity, the reconciliation of family and work and equal opportunities for all women and girls. In Australia, it is essential that the Government commits to and funds the Productivity Commission’s Paid Maternity, Paternity and Parental Leave scheme in the 2009 Federal Budget.

The AEU also supports calls for a renewed commitment by Governments to implementing the Millennium Development Goals and achievement of the Education for All and enforcing the UN Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination (CEDAW) which would help to ensure that women and girls were guaranteed access to education and lives free from violence.

parental-leave-cut-outs.jpgTo date, this Government has delayed the introduction of a paid parental leave scheme - waiting for the Productivity Commission to report, while making grand promises to mums and dads around Australia.

The Productivity Commission has now reported and the evidence is in: government-funded paid parental leave is good for babies, good for parents and good for the economy. And at $450 million a year, it's a sound investment.

We've just found out though that a decision on whether to include paid parental leave in this year's budget sits on a knife's edge.

Sign the petition telling the Government this delivery is overdue - and we'll take it directly to Canberra next week as the Budget decisions are being made:
